Vina Robles is about to open a 3300-seat amphitheater that will feature some of the hottest musical acts in the world. It’s a trend that is very hot in the wine business and we couldn’t be happier! We wrap things up with Matt Dubow, our Gadget Guru from Epic Style with some thoughts of bode bags and flasks!

Discovering Carmel Colored Wine!

This week’s Grape Encounters takes us to extraordinary Carmel Valley and Carmel by the Sea. First stop, the Bernardus Winery and Tasting Room Manager Philip Carruthers. Founded by Ben Pon, Bernardus makes extraordinary wines and also operates an amazing luxury resort, restaurant and spa.

Next we head across the street to meet with Annette Hoff Danzer, Winemaker at Cima Collina which produces wines from small Monterey County vineyards with a unique focus on the partnership between the growers who influence the vineyards and the winemaking practices that take the grapes to the bottle. Annette is well known in the region because she has helped countless independent winemakers get started.

Next stop, Caraccioli Cellars in Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and a spirited conversation with Scott Caraccioli, VP of Sales & Marketing for this family-run winery featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals in both still and sparkling options. Their tasting room is part of the Carmel Wine Walk; the walk features more than 14 tasting rooms within a walkable square mile.

Finally, since the Grape Encounters is on the road for weeks to come, we turn to Gadget Guru Matt DuBow for a little advice on how to get your wine home in this age of complicated travel!

Raising the Steaks

Steak and wine have been linked together, forever. Just as a glass of wine is part of any important occasion, so, too, is a flavorful slab of rib-eye, sirloin or tenderloin. But over the past few years, a tantalizing twist has added to this mix, and the idea is spreading. Clever meat farmers have been raising beef on a diet that includes wine. You heard correctly. Wine Fed Beef. I know. The image this conjures is not necessarily pretty. Picture a ton of living steak…walking around with a buzz. Steer clear of that steer…don’t get in its way. But, make sure to get some on your plate. Because, by most accounts, wine-fed steaks are some of the tastiest pieces of meat you’ll ever eat. This whole concept takes the classic combination of steak and wine, and joins them a full stage earlier – right on the feedlot. Turns out that chugging wine, does not produce an angry Angus, but a happier herd. Just ask Janice Ravndahl, whose cattle ranch in Western Canada is attracting lots of attention – and business – because her free-range cows are not only grass fed and hormone-free: For the last 60 days of life, each receives a daily liter of red wine. Ravndahl, who comes from a long line of cattle ranchers, says she decided to give booze to her beef after seeing TV chef Gordon Ramsay plying pigs with beer. Her first idea was to pour some Pilsner for her cows, as supposedly given to highly-prized Kobe and Wagyu beef. But Janice became convinced that beer bloats cattle. So, being surrounded by Canada’s famous Okanagan vineyards, she instead opted for the wine cocktail for her beef, and created Sezmu Meats – named for an ancient Egyptian wine god. She
reports that her cows love feed mixed with wine, and some even lap it up straight from the bucket. According to Ravndahl, the wine-fed animals are more blissful and sociable than others, and seem to moo more to each other.

The resulting meat has brought rave reviews from master chefs at the top restaurants in the area, who say Sezmu beef is tender, sweet, well-marbled, and delicious – simply superior. If you believe the reviews, wine-fed beef could well challenge Japan’s famous Kobe beef, for the title of World’s Best Steak.
A similar thing is happening in Western Australia’s renowned wine region, where they’re raising Wagyu-type cattle on a diet that features a daily mix of
Cabernet and Merlot. And they, too are said to produce some of the best meat that can be found. This movement’s also starting up, we’re told, here at
home in the wine-friendly state of Washington.

However, not everyone is thrilled by boozing bovines. Critics claim the idea of snockered steer is completely un-sustainable. But on the plus side, it is also reported that wine-drinking cattle emit less methane gas than their more sober counterparts, which means less of the dreaded Greenhouse Effect.
And, university studies are now underway to see whether wine-fed meat carries the same heart-healthy benefits conveyed by red wine itself. So, if you ever do chomp down on a tipsy tenderloin, you might be doing yourself a favor. As for Janice Ravndahl, life is good: her meat is now taking Vancouver by storm…and she’s mapping plans to do serious business in the United States. Wine and Politics

Wine and Politics. Now, there’s a Tasty Nexus that goes right back to our pre-historic Solar Plexus. The earliest known example of wine production dates back 8,000 years to Georgia, in Europe. Since that was the Stone Age, we’re not sure exactly who decided to grow those grapes, but would bet it was the Chief, not the grunt of the tribe.

That sets the template. Wine has been linked to Royal (translation) Political rulers from ancient Egypt to Europe, including the Spaniards who brought wine-making to America. A direct genetic connection extends from grapes planted by the politicians of the Roman Empire to France’s Bordeaux region and thus, the wines of America.

Speaking of which, the Father of Our Country…was a Wino! George Washington was an intensely personal fan of the fullbodied Madeira wines of 18th century Portugal. Another founding father, Thomas Jefferson, not only installed a massive wine cellar beneath the White House but wrote “Good wine is a necessity of life…I double the doctor’s recommendation of a glass and a half each day and even triple it with a friend.”

Now, in modern America, the collision of wine and politics continues. Common thinking often has it that Conservatives or Republicans, tending to be older and wealthier, like more complex varietals. Democrat Liberal types, often being younger, prefer sweeter, less-expensive wines.

Of course, it’s not that simple. Everyone has a unique palate, so you find real-life complexity…when you zoom down to where wine and politics collide. Here’s why you’ll be as confused as I am, at the end of this report.

For openers, records show wine-makers give more to Democrats, while beer-makers give more to Republicans. One would be tempted to think it were the other way around. Meantime, President Nixon –whose political base was conservative Middle America – was a closet wine snob, though a smart one. His favorite bottle was a French Chateau Margaux from one of Bordeaux’s oldest wineries. Nixon always made sure that wine was poured from napkin-covered bottles so as to hide its French origins. A few years earlier, JFK, the man who beat Nixon in 1960, was much more out front with his love of things French. His First Lady, born a Bouvier, turned the White House into what was said to be “the best French restaurant in Washington.” John Kennedy maintained a private, but massive, wine cellar that
included Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, 1864, worth at least 15 thousand a bottle today! So, Nixon and Kennedy would indeed have agreed that Bordeaux rocks! Different politics, same good taste…

How about our current Prez? Barack Obama, believed to be a very light drinker, has nonetheless shown a strong affection for wine…serving Graham Beck Brut, a sparkler from South Africa at his inaugural event. Mr. Obama is also said to have his own private wine cellar back home in Chicago.

The fellow said likely to oppose Democrat Obama in the next election, Republican Mitt Romney, reportedly does not consume alcohol, as per his faith…preferring milk, or soda. But while you can’t bet on knocking one back with Romney you can knock one back in Romney –Romney, Indiana or Romney, West Virginia, both of which play host to many wine-selling establishments. And loony as that may seem,
the exact sort of name-game connection has touched the household of famed Democrats Bill and Hillary Clinton. They hired New York’s Clinton Winery (named after another Founding Father – a onetime vice-president not related to Bill Clinton) to help celebrate daughter Chelsea’s recent wedding in Rhinebeck, New York. Then, too, consider that the Washington DC International Wine and Food Festival chose its latest venue to be the Woodrow Wilson Plaza of the Ronald Reagan Building at the Trade Center in Washington. Wilson – the Epic Progressive. Reagan – the Quintessential Conservative. In Washington – named for that Madeira lover…the Father of our Country.

United…over wine….in a strange sector of the universe – not unlike our own Hidden Compound – that surely blurs the line…when it comes to politics and the fruit of the vine.

Opening Doors (and Dreams) in Tuscany

What is your dream of dreams? What would you really do…if you won the lottery….or suddenly began to dance as if no one were looking? Would you fly into Wine Country and launch a lovely and memorable day, filled with the sights and scents of rolling hills, neat rows of grapes, scenic drives through Italy’s Tuscan wine region…strolling ancient cellars…tasting spectacular Spumante?

But wait – isn’t there more to your dream of dreams? Does it end when the sun sets over Tuscany? No. Because in this dream, you stay in Wine Country. Wake up the next morning – and a thousand after that – to grapes, and saffron, and olive blossoms in the air. You work the earth and refine the vine…you live the life…and fashion your passion…as a true Wine Maker.

There. We’ve said It. The secret dream…the fantasy within the fantasy. Going to Wine Country…not merely for a one-nighter…but moving in…to stay. Working the
earth…to elicit the Elixir.

But, how do you get there from here? That’s not as tricky as you might think, to see if the Wine Life is truly…for you. For starters, though, experts say lose the daydream of kicking back with a glass of chianti at Easy Vineyard after a day of short hours. The wine industry is hands-on, hard-working, and fiercely competitive, just like any other business. Many positions require higher education. Thus, a good place to scratch is entry-level work in, or near, wine-making. Such beginner-work will help you see if the vintage life is for you. So, back to specifics: To toil in Tuscany, you must have work papers in order. Get a good Italian accountant or commercialista to assist you. Get your employment deal in writing. Even though today’s high nemployment in Italy means the job search may be a touch difficult, you have a wonderful advantage: You speak fluent English…highly prized on the Italian job scene. Your English, in fact, may open more doors for you than your degree.

For example, the ancient Tuscan towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino are famous wine-producing centers with many firms that export to America. These cities are great places to prospect. The inns, bistros, bed and breakfasts, farm retreats, vacation villas, spas, schools and restaurants of Italy’s Wine Country are always looking for fluent English-speaking people who are computer and Internet savvy. You’ll work as receptionist, manager, wait staff or marketing-on-commission. Many companies are American-owned and need English speakers to lead cooking, walking or bicycle tours, and painting and art schools. You’ll find a multitude of agencies if you search the Net on the region and the interest you have…or click to the Italian Yellow Pages. Call the local Italian tourist office – a good source for job leads. And believe it or not, you can also swing a Wine Scholarship to college…courtesy of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture…a wonderful resource for getting into wine making and the wine industry. And you can go online and hit up a specific vineyard. Some very cool winery jobs and internships are listed on the Internet, by such firms as Biltmore vintners in North Carolina…Mudbrick in New Zealand…and numerous other growers, including many here in California. Wine marketing jobs abound – meaning you could trade your stuffy sales cubicle for a lush life, using same skills, in Wine Country. All of the atmospherics but virtually no risk, allowing you to see if you have the wine life in your blood. You can be processing grapes through all the wine-making steps to produce bottle-ready wine… And, of course, you can also get your feet wet (pun intended) by dishing out a few bucks for a guided tour of the vineyards…here or abroad…a tour de force…for the fan of le vin…so many ways to go, to see if you have the Ripe Stuff…for an industry made in Heaven.

What Your Wine Selection May Say About Your Personality

Legend has it that the father of modern psychology, Sigmund
Freud, once commented that, “sometimes, a cigar is just a
cigar.” And while that may be so, the same probably does not
apply to…you guessed it…wine!

When was a glass of wine….ever…just…a glass of wine.
Always, there is mood…and feeling…not to mention
the “character” and “personality” of the wine itself.

No wonder that today’s psychologists – the heirs of Dr. Freud
– are starting to look very carefully at how your very choice of
wines…defines…your particular character and personality.

Think about it. Is it possible that one could tell…from your
Zinfandel…what’s going on inside of you? Are you aperitif
apparent?

According to the evidence: Yes!

Recent research by scientists in Australia and Britain indicates
that drinkers who reach for sweet-tasting wines are more likely
to be impulsive while those who choose dry varietals show
a higher tendency for openness. So, again, sweet equals “I
shoot from the hip…I jet to Vegas on a dare…I…elope.” Dry
equals “What you see is what you get…I share my feelings…I
am Transparent.”

Meantime, from Canada comes word, that your wine trait
may be a sealed fate. Scientists up North have found a
particular gene that appears to make you reach for that sweet
wine…or, the chocolate next to it, for that matter. This gene,
appropriately called “GLUT-2,” may help explain why some
people crave sweet food and drink, while others can resist the
temptation.

But we digress. Back to the issue at hand: how your love of
wine reveals your personality.

Knowing we’d be curious about this, researchers at
Yankelovich Monitor, who measure the big social and
marketing trends, queried a couple thousand people,
and determined that if you drink wine you are likely to
be a…trendsetter…open to new experiences…and an
information-savvy, confident consumer. Furthermore, you
desire intangibles, have your life priorities in order, and follow
your own unique path in life! Yankelovich explains that those
who join wine-of-the-month clubs, in fact, are walking on the
wild side – sort of. They are seeking adventure…albeit safe
adventure! Other traits researchers link to the American
Wine Drinker: more likely to be a college grad…enjoy higher-
than-average income…travel abroad more…and gravitate to
large population centers! Not too bad, on balance.

So there, you have it. You are what you drink…we think.
But enough of this. Gotta go. There are, after all, those
intangibles to ponder.

Taking Wine Home In A High Security World

Some aspects of the wine-lover’s life can be downright daunting. Let’s see if this has happened to you: You’re up in Wine Country, having the tasting of your life. And you’re thinking of flying home with a few bottles. But wait, you say…what about all those TSA security rules. You know – you cannot board the plane with any liquid container larger than 3 ounces…unless its medicine or mother’s milk. Doesn’t leave much room for wine, does it? So you drop the idea and trudge out of the tasting room empty-handed.

That’s been happening a lot…so much so, that sales have reportedly plunged at various wine tasting rooms, which can be devastating since some wineries depend on these sales for up to half their profits!

What you need to know – is this: You can put as much wine as your heart desires onto a jetliner. So long as it’s in Checked baggage. No carry-on…all the wine you want in cargo.

United Airline’s own website, for example, says there’s “No Limit” on the amount of wine they accept. Continental and other airlines have the same policy.

But caution: if you’re planning to cross a State Line to haul your liquid loot home, whether by car or plane, keep in mind that some states may bar you from bringing in out-of-state wines. Texas, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Washington and many more have waged some form of interstate wine wars over the years, leading to court fights and confusion. So check the local rules with the state ABC to avoid trouble.

Meantime, here’s a website that may clear up this mess. It’s a UPS page that clearly shows which states allow which other states’ wines in….whether you fly it, drive it or ship it. It’s designed to tell you where UPS will fly wines, but the very same list applies to what you can personally import state-to-state by yourself. Now, what if you’re wine shopping overseas? A quick note: don’t try to mail your wine back to America – that’s against the rules. And no, you cannot ship alcohol internationally. Here’s how you can get foreign wines home. US Customs says there is no limit to how much wine you can personally bring in…but…only the first bottle is duty-free. After that, the Feds impose a 3 percent duty and a 40 cent tax per additional bottle. Some savvy wine travelers claim that some Customs folks ignore the surcharges, because they’re so low, it’s not worth the time or the paperwork! You probably don’t want to count on that…so, declare everything, and maybe you’ll get lucky.

A couple of more helpful tidbits: In addition to US laws, the laws of the State where your return flight touches down, also govern the amount of wine you can bring in and how it’s taxed…so before you depart, you should contact the state’s beverage control board to get the score.

And – just like domestically– while you cannot carry a single bottle of wine onto the USA-bound jetliner, you can put lots of wine into your check-in luggage and wing it on home.

Creating Your Own Wine Is Easier Than You Think

When it comes to America’s love affair with wine…the official beverage of romance….the State of the Union is STRONG! And not just from the standpoint of consuming the liquid of the gods: Winemaking in the USA is truly a “growth industry,” even in the face of the deepest recession, since the Great Depression. In fact, now more than ever, you don’t have to be rich to switch….to a pastime or career of bottling your own. No champagne budget required, if you choose to become a purveyor of Pinot.

The numbers tell the story. And they are impressive numbers, indeed…as well as in seed. Believe it or not, while housing and small business were tanking, America’s affinity for wine was growing, despite the recession. According to the Wine Institute, the overall US wine market grew 2 percent in 2010. Nearly 330 million cases are devoured per year here, albeit that many consumers switched to cheaper wines. In the words of John Gillespie, head of the Wine Market Council, based in Napa Valley, “We’ve just completed 17 straight years of growth in consumption of table wine in the United States, which is really an incredible record.” His assessment is not an exaggeration: America has more than a million acres under vino cultivation, and for the first time ever, overall US wine sales have topped the wine-loving French. That’s big news for vintners — on both sides of the Pond.

Which brings us back to the idea that you or I would not be pipe-dreaming, if we dared to dream…of making our own. Let’s take a look at California, by far the country’s leading wine-making state. More than three fourth’s of California’s 2-thousand wineries are small, mom-and-pop outfits. The bounty of these boutiques goes largely to local markets and private customer lists. So, even if your last name isn’t Gallo or Mondavi, YOU, too can be a player in this beloved industry.

But…where do you turn to get your turn at becoming the next 2-Buck Chuck? You can start by Googling “DIY” as in do-it yourself, followed by wine. You’ll immediately pull up more than 20-MILLION leads….everything from
hundred-dollar home-brew starter kits, to blogs detailing how to make-your-own. There’s even a site based in California’s Napa valley called Crushpad, dedicated to helping you create your own boutique wine, from grape
to bottle. Crushpad promises, “Even if you’re new to winemaking, and lead a busy lifestyle, you can still make your own wine, your way.” The idea is, you choose your own level of involvement, and let them take it from there.
You select the grapes….from California’s wine country or the French vineyards of Bordeaux…and Crushpad custom-makes batches in small lots. For a fraction of what you’d pay for a new set of wheels, you get 25 cases of your own boutique wine. So, whether you are a wine enthusiast, retailer, or run a restaurant, a modest investment can launch your very own label. Now, that’s a flavor you might just savor!

The Quirk of Cork

For the die-hard romantic, it is one of the most essential elements of the wine drinking experience. No, it is not Ravel’s “Bolero” or Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,” it is the humble cork–that low tech little device that’s been keeping wine safely in its container since at least the 1st Century BC. We know it’s been around at least that long because vessels dating back to that era have been found with both the cork and the wine still in them. Talk about laying your wine down for a while!

For as long as wine lovers have been enjoying the fruit of the vine, the cork has been a key part of the romantic ritual, and though history has seen millions, if not billions, of corks kill the mood by shattering apart or by pushed back into the bottle, the ceremonial removal of the cork is a bit of wine drinking foreplay that most would not like to see replaced by twist off caps or synthetic enclosure materials.

Despite the history of this ritual, most people know very little about that soft wooden stopper that is crammed into the north end of most wine bottles. Cork is actually the bark harvested from a species of Oak tree known scientifically as Quercus suber, grown largely in Spain and Portugal. The bark is painstakingly harvested every nine years, and each time the bark regenerates itself it grows stronger and takes on a higher quality than the previous harvest. Sustainability could easily be cork’s middle name, because the bark removal process – axe and all – is harmless to the tree. Nothing is wasted. Once the bottle stoppers are punched out, every shred of the remaining product is put to other uses. And, properly pampered, Cork Oaks live upwards of 250 years! So it’s actually possible that the very tree whose cork was popped at your great-granddaddy’s wedding…might be the same one that offered up its bark for yours! Though more than 50% of all cork is grown in Portugal and Spain, there are a number of other countries that also grow cork for profit, including Italy, France, Tunisia, South Africa, and the USA. In fact, over 5 million acres worldwide are dedicated to corky cultivation. Today cork is used in the production of everything from floors to footwear – even spaceship insulation — and is a 1.5 billion dollar industry. And despite cork’s many other uses, wine stoppers alone represent more than a billion dollars of all those cork sales.

What many don’t realize is that cork is not simply an efficient and romantic way to seal a bottle of wine and keep air from spoiling it. Since ancient history, it has symbolized some very important virtues. Branches and leaves from the cork tree were used by the ancient Romans and Egyptians to honor their athletic superstars. In ancient Greece, the trees were revered as symbols of liberty and honor. For that reason, only priests were allowed to cut them down. These felled trees were consecrated to the Gods of Olympus.

Meanwhile, back here among the mortals, the once revered little stopper has found, itself in a bit of a tug of war recently—its reputation tainted both figuratively and literally. Cork taint, a smelly but harmless biological agent, has been labeled the ruin of many a good wine. It is believed that a compound referred to as TCA has been finding its way into quality wines by way of infected corks. Defenders of the cork claim that there are a number of other likely explanations for the musty flavor imparted into these wines such as unsanitary practices in the winery. Nonetheless, the controversy has focused a lot of attention on alternatives like screw caps and – say it isn’t so! – synthetic corks, which are cleverly designed to look and act like the real thing. Except…the replacements come up way short of actual cork on the sustainability scale, and unlike our ancient plug, are not biodegradable. Not to mention that screw caps and pseudo corks, can be prone to an aroma taint all their own: the smell of sulphur, caused by reduced oxygen supply. And, warring factions aside, we’ll tend to cast our lot with Quercus suber…the real cork deal. Because, let’s face it: popping a real cork can soak any event in celebration.

Cabernet Concoctions Recipes

Cabernet Pasta

1/2 lb pasta
1/2 bottle Cab
salt to taste
2 tbs butter
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 lemon squeezed
1/2 cup cream
Salt and pepper to taste

1. Bring 1/2 bottle of wine to boil. Add pinch salt and pasta. Boil to al dente.
2. In sauce pan on medium heat, melt butter and add garlic and lemon juice. Slowly add cream, turn down heat, and whisk continuously so that the sauce does not break
3. Drain pasta and pour cream sauce over pasta. Add sprig of oregano or basil and serve.

Cabernet Coleslaw

1 head of red cabbage (rinse leaves and set aside)
1/2 of beet peeled and shredded
1.2 of red onion sliced
1 cup of Cabernet
1 tbs olive oil

1/8 tsp sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

1. In Ziploc bag, add cabbage, beet, onion, wine, oil, sugar, and salt and pepper. Seal bag and let marinate for at least 1 hour.
2. Drain mixture. Heat grill pan on high and spray with oil. Gently grill cabbage mixture until brown on edges. Serve immediately.

Cabernet Potatoes

1 lb baby white potatoes (quartered)
3/4 bottle of Cabernet
Salt
4 fresh sage leaves minced
3 garlic cloves smashed
Sea salt and pepper to taste
2 tbs olive oil

1. Bring wine to a boil in large pot. Add potatoes and salt. Cook potatoes until tender and drain.
2. In mixing bowl add cooked potatoes, minced sage and garlic, salt and pepper and olive oil.
3. On oiled baking sheet, pour out potatoes so that they are spread out over cookie sheet. Bake at450 until golden brown (about 10-12 minutes). Serve immediately.

Cabernet Blackberry Bread Pudding

1 pkg Hawaiian Buns (torn in pieces)

1/2 cup Cabernet

1 can of evaporated milk

4 eggs

1 container of blackberries

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 tbs butter

1. In a large mixing bowl, add torn pieces of bread and wine Let soak for about 20 minutes.

2. In a medium bowl, mix together evaporated milk, eggs, blackberries, and cinnamon. Make sure eggs are mixed well.

3. In a 9 x 11 baking dish, spray with cooking spray. Add bread mixture and then pour blackberry mixture on top.

4. Set baking dish on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. Then add pats of butter around dish and bake 15 minutes longer or until set.

Cabernet Avocado Ice Cream

1 ripe avocado (peeled and halved with seed discarded)

1 can of evaporated milk

1/2 cup Cabernet

1/4 cup to 1/2 cup milk

1. In blender, add avocado, evaporated milk, and Cabernet, blend until smooth.

2. Check consistency of mixture. If a little too thick, add milk to your liking.

3. Pour into a bowl and set in the refrigerator for 1 hour or more.

4. Follow the directions of your ice cream maker, pour mixture into the machine and run until mixture gets nice and thick. Return bowl to the freezer for 1 hour and serve.

Does Your Personality Determine Your Wine Preferences?

Legend has it that the father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud, once commented that, “sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.” And while that may be so, the same probably does not apply to…you guessed it…wine!

When was a glass of wine….ever…just…a glass of wine. Always, there is mood…and feeling…not to mention the “character” and “personality” of the wine itself.

No wonder that today’s psychologists – the heirs of Dr. Freud – are starting to look very carefully at how your very choice of wines…defines…your particular character and personality.

Think about it. Is it possible that one could tell…from your Zinfandel…what’s going on inside of you? Are you aperitif apparent?

According to the evidence: Yes!

Recent research by scientists in Australia and Britain indicates that drinkers who reach for sweet-tasting wines are more likely to be impulsive while those who choose dry varietals show a higher tendency for openness. So, again, sweet equals “I shoot from the hip…I jet to Vegas on a dare…I…elope.” Dry equals “What you see is what you get…I share my feelings…I am Transparent.”

So if your sweet tooth leads you to the nearest Port, Muscatel, Sauterne, Reisling, sweet Loire Chenin Blanc or Vouvray, you are hereby branded a Firebrand. If your slant on decant leans toward the drier Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscadet or a Spanish Albarino, you are an Open Book. By the way…the Brit and Aussie scientists who did this study knew exactly where to look for their human drinking subjects: the nearby golf club, and the nearby University.
Meantime, from Canada comes word, that your wine trait may be a sealed fate. Scientists up North have found a particular gene that appears to make you reach for that sweet wine…or, the chocolate next to it, for that matter. This gene, appropriately called “GLUT-2,” may help explain why some people crave sweet food and drink, while others can resist the temptation.

But we digress. Back to the issue at hand: how your love of wine reveals your personality.

Knowing we’d be curious about this, researchers at Yankelovich Monitor, who measure the big social and marketing trends, queried a couple thousand people, and determined that if you drink wine you are likely to be a…trendsetter…open to new experiences…and an information-savvy, confident consumer. Furthermore, you desire intangibles, have your life priorities in order, and follow your own unique path in life! Yankelovich explains that those who join wine-of-the-month clubs, in fact, are walking on the wild side – sort of. They are seeking adventure…albeit safe adventure! Other traits researchers link to the American Wine Drinker: more likely to be a college grad…enjoy higher-than-average income…travel abroad more…and gravitate to large population centers! Not too bad, on balance.

So there, you have it. You are what you drink…we think. But enough of this. Gotta go. There are, after all, those intangibles to ponder.

Study: Wine Gives Women Intellectual Edge Over Men

Norway (KGO) — According to a recent study out of Norway, wine gives women a bit of an intellectual edge over men.

The so-called study tested more than 5,000 middle-age men and women over seven years.

The research shows that women who drank wine four or more times over a two week period scored better on cognitive tests than those who drank only one glass during that same time.

One reason may be due to the polyphenols or antioxidants in wine.
Another reason could be the alcohol itself, which helps blood circulation.

NORTH AMERICA

California

The 2009 North Coast vintage was difficult due to rain and will require careful selection, especially when shopping for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends. Focus buying on North Coast Cabs and blends from 2006-2008, which are still available and should prove ageworthy. Pinot Noirs from 2007 and 2008 are also good across the board, with the nod to the stellar 2007s, especially from Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. For current drinking, the 2006 Pinots are showing well, especially from Santa Barbara County. Syrah, Zinfandel and Chardonnay are not particularly ageable and can decline after a few years in the bottle. Until the 2009s are released, seek more recent vintages, such as 2007. –Steve Heimoff

Washington

2010 brought challenges but should be excellent for Merlot and Syrah; Cabs will be spotty. Effects of rot and mold may hurt the whites. Right now, the 2006 reds are coming out of their shells; the 2007s remain scultpted and stylish. The 2008 whites are often searingly acidic, but vivid and racy, delicious with oysters. –Paul Gregutt

Oregon

The 2010 vintage was wet throughout the harvest season, so you’ll have to pick your producers carefully. The 2008 Pinots are getting good press, and deservedly so; but some real bargains can be found among the 2007s, and they are drinking well right now. The 2006 Pinots are a vintage to cellar, though quite enjoyable already. –P.G.

New York

The summer of 2009 was cool, but perfect for lovers of aromatic high-acid Rieslings from the Finger Lakes. It was a great year for reds in 2008, and those wines are still on the market, but treasure hunters will be rewarded with some late-released Long Island and Finger Lake Merlots and Cab Francs from the 2004 and 2005 vintages. –Anna Lee Iijima

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

Australia

By all accounts, the 2010 vintage is promising, but 2009 is remarkably consistent and should offer top wines from all of the major growing regions, with the possible exception of the Yarra Valley. Heat spikes make 2008 wine more hit and miss. For drinking, crack open Clare Valley Rieslings from 2002 and 2005, but give the big reds from 2007 a little more time to shed their sometimes difficult tannins. Those reds from 1996 and 1998 continue to shine. –Joe Czerwinski

New Zealand

Most New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs should be consumed within a year of the vintage, so drink up any remaining 2009s and look for the 2010s, which are streaming into the market. Pinot Noirs arrive a year later; the 2009s should be particularly good. –J.C.

South Africa

In contrast to previous vintages, 2009 was a great year for both red and white wines. Buy high-end barrel-aged whites from 2009 or opt for fresher styles from 2010 (think Sauvignon Blanc and unoaked Chenin Blanc) to drink now. For reds, buy and hold 2009s (especially Shiraz, Pinotage and Bordeaux varieties), test the maturity of 2007 and 2006 selections and start drinking 2005s or older. –Lauren Buzzeo

Chile

The year 2010 will go down as one of Chile’s most incredible years ever, highlighted by the massive February earthquake and later the saga over the 33 trapped (and rescued) miners. As for wines, 2010 yielded a lower volume than average but was solid in terms of quality, with early release Sauvignon Blancs already showing better than in 2009. For fans of top-shelf Chilean reds from the Maipo, Cachapoal and Colchagua valleys, 2007 is the vintage to be drinking now. –Michael Schachner

Argentina

By all accounts, 2010 was a very good year in Argentina, but maybe not quite as good as 2009, which Doña Paula winemaker Edy del Popolo labels “one of the best three vintages in recent years along with 2006 and 2002.” Adhering to del Popolo’s assessment, we recommend drinking 2006 high-end Malbecs and red blends, and then seeking 2009 Malbecs and other reds for everyday pleasure. If the white Torrontés grape is to your liking, then look for the freshest 2010 bottlings you can find and bypass the ’09s, which are fading. –M.S.

EUROPE

France

There was half as much rain in Bordeaux for the six months to the end of August as there was in 2009, itself a dry year. Producers are “very optimistic” about the wines that will be available as futures this spring. In Burgundy, the 2006 and 2004 whites are good to drink now. Chablis whites from 2004 and 2002 are tasting delicious. Start opening 2003 and 1999 reds, as well as lighter reds from 2001, 1997 and 1996. The top Loire dry Chenins from 2004 and 2002 are just showing signs of maturity, but wait on 2005 until next year. The top quality 2004 vintage in Alsace is just beginning to show its best, especially the Pinot Gris.

In the Rhône, 2009 looks good for current-drinking from the south and potentially great, long-lived Syrahs from the north; drink up most 2000s and snatch up any lingering 2007s from the south. From Languedoc, buy and cellar reds from 2006 and younger, and start drinking 2005s, although some may still require additional time. The ripe and concentrated 2009 whites are mostly ready to drink now though some, like grand cru wines from La Clape, Terrasses du Larzac and Limoux, can hold another year or two. –Roger Voss, J.C., L.B.

Italy

With several excellent vintages in the pipeline, there’s a strong argument to make that says Italian wine has never tasted better. Starting with 2004, the past six years have delivered a proud assembly of top wines from the tip to the toe of the boot-shaped peninsula. Focus immediate attention on the elegant 2005 Brunellos (on the market now), but save some money for the 2006s (released in January), which promise to be even better in terms of mouthfeel. The 2006 Barolos are showing enormous elegance and the 2007 Barbarescos deliver impressive brightness of fruit. Reds and whites from 2008 and 2009 boast both harmony and complexity thanks to favorable growing conditions. –Monica Larner

Spain

The 2010 harvest in Spain is a positive follow up to the well-regarded, somewhat warm 2009 vintage except in Priorat, where rains before and during harvest caused problems. For drinking now, if you had the foresight to put away higher-end Riojas, Ribera del Dueros, Priorat blends and other serious reds from 2001, those should be in ideal condition at 10 years of age; also start opening your 2004, ’05 and ’06 upper-tier reds to gauge progress. All were strong vintages, with 2004 being the most structured; 2005 the most opulent and 2006 the warmest and most easygoing of the three. As for 2007 and 2008, these were years with rain and other negative factors; the view here is that 2007 was the better year but that neither had the goods to produce classic wines. –M.S.

Germany

Quality is variable and quantities were down in 2010, but the 2009 vintage was excellent and should be the main focus of any buying during 2011. Drink up remaining kabinetts from prior to 2005, and check in on how any 2003s and 2006s are evolving—some of the wines from these years are developing rather quickly because of low acidity or botrytis. –J.C.

Portugal

The classic Port vintages to start drinking now are 1997 and 2000, but also look for single Quinta Ports from 2004 and 2001. Of top red table wines from the last decade, 2003 and 2000 are the vintages to start opening. –R.V.

Austria

The best 2004 and 2001 sweet whites, always good value despite their rarity, are worth starting on, as are the dry whites from 2005 and 2004. Look at your reds from 2004, 2001 and 2000, especially the lighter Zweigelt. –R.V.

The Wine Big Boys, Part 1 — WHO’S MAKING & SELLING WHAT: THE WINE GROUP

On this week’s show, we thought it would be interesting to show you where some of your favorite wines are coming from. In reality, a small group of companies is responsible for producing the bulk of the wine we drink. The first company we would like to profile is The Wine Group.

Please note this is the first part of a four-part blog series. Here’s the scoop:

The Wine Group

The third largest producer in the US is The Wine Group. This is a truly “stealth” company, it doesn’t even have a website! Wine Group sells over 24,000,000 cases of California wine each year with brands like:

Corbett Canyon
Glen Ellen
Concannon
Foxhorn (Their version of Two-Buck Chuck)
Franzia (Their money machine)
Mogen David Kosher wine
Tribuno Vermouth

They also have a few imports like:
Austin Vale (Australia)
Casarsa (Italy)
Morasutti (Italy)

In 2004 they bought Golden State Vintners, a production company that they acquired mostly to have excess production capacity. They paid over $100 million for a bulk wine supplier that produced over 12 million cases each year (for other people’s brands – see note below). This will continue to give them substantial access to continue to supply their products.

Once part of Coca Cola, (yes, Coke was once in the wine business – they even owned Sterling!) The Wine Group was formed to buy out Franzia Brothers. More interesting trivia – Franzia (as in the bag in the box) is not owned by Fred Franzia of Bronco wine Company, rather his namesake brand was sold to The Wine Group at its formation.

The Wine Group has continued to use its low-end high-volume products to produce lots of cash for additional acquisitions (Concannon, Golden State and Glen Ellen most recently). Now that Gallo is starting to pick up a few brands like Bridlewood and Barefoot, look for The Wine Group to make some purchases this year. My guess is that they will stay in the sub-$10 price category and that they will pick up some of the negociant** brands for themselves.

** (Negociant brands are brands made without a physical winery home. Golden State Vintners, for example, serviced a number of these. GSV sold the wine to them, bottled the wine, applied the labels and the Negociant company picked it up and handled the sales process. No investing in vineyards, tanks, etc. Nice, but with the oversupply ending, potentially a risky place to be in the coming months. Examples include Barefoot, Smoking Loon, Rex Goliath)

The Wine Big Boys, Part 2 — THE DOMINANT COMPANY THAT STARTED IT ALL: E&J GALLO

E&J Gallo

E & J Gallo Winery was founded in 1933 by Ernest Gallo and Julio Gallo in Modesto, California. E & J Gallo Winery is the largest exporter of California wines. The company has been pivotal in establishing Sonoma County as one of the premier wine growing regions in the world.

The two brothers started the winery following the repeal of Prohibition after years of growing and selling grapes. Ernest and Julio were competing against larger, more established, and better financed companies, including more than 800 wine companies in the first few years after Prohibition in California alone. Their starting capital was less than $6,000, with $5,000 of that borrowed by Ernest from his mother-in-law.

The brothers learned the craft of commercial winemaking by reading old, pre-Prohibition pamphlets published by the University of California which they retrieved from the basement of the Modesto Public Library.

E & J Gallo Winery is the largest family-owned winery in the United States. As of 22 September 2008, fifteen members of the family’s second, third, and fourth generations work for the company.

Gallo helped develop and implement the Code of Sustainable Wine Growing Practices, in collaboration with the Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers.

The Code promotes sustainable practices which are environmentally sound, economically feasible and socially equitable. It covers virtually every aspect of the wine business including viticulture and grape growing, wine making, purchasing and building and maintaining productive relationships with neighbors and the local communities.

Ernest and Julio were instrumental in introducing American consumers to wine and creating the modern US wine market. They were among the pioneers of wine advertising on television and launched many memorable wine advertising campaigns. They were the first to introduce brand management and modern merchandising to the wine industry, and led the way in bringing new products to store shelves. They were first in breakthrough quality initiatives such as long-term grower contracts for varietal grapes and grape research programs. They were also first to establish a truly significant foreign sales and marketing force to export California wines overseas.

Wine Brands

In addition to the Gallo Family Vineyards brand, the company makes, markets, and distributes wine under other labels including Louis M. Martini, Mirassou Vineyards, MacMurray Ranch, Rancho Zabaco, Ecco Domani, Frei Brothers, Red Bicyclette, Bella Sera, Turning Leaf, Black Swan, Sebeka, Twin Valley, Barefoot Wine, Redwood Creek, and Bridlewood. Additionally, they make the low-end fortified wines Thunderbird and Night Train Express.

André is the best-selling brand of sparkling wine in the United States. It often sells for about $4 to $5 per bottle, depending on the store. André’s California Champagne does not use traditional Champagne wine making methods, but is instead bulk fermented. While the United States agreed in 2006 to not approve any new wine labels for US produced products that include the term “Champagne,” André is legally allowed to use the term as a grandfathered label.

Carlo Rossi is a brand of wine produced by the E & J Gallo Winery. The brand was named after Charles Rossi, at the time a salesman for Gallo and a relation of the Gallo family by marriage. Charlie Rossi starred in TV ads for the brand in the 1970s. Carlo Rossi wines were at one point the second best selling brand in the United States.

Boone’s Farm was formerly a brand of apple wine produced by the E & J Gallo Winery. Now, flavors are malt-based instead of wine-based due to changes in tax laws. The brand is popular on college campuses due to its low price.

The Wine Big Boys, Part 3 — MAMMOTH AUSTRALIAN COMPANY WITH DEEP AMERICAN ROOTS: FOSTERS GROUP

Fosters Group

Foster’s Group is a beer group with interests in brewing, wine-making and soft drinks. Foster’s Group is the brewer of the Foster’s Lager. Foster’s Group Limited is a publicly-listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange and is based in Melbourne, Victoria. Its wine division Beringer Blass is the 7th largest producer of wine in the United States. CEO Trevor O’Hoy, resigned on the 10th June 2008 after poor performance by the wine division of the group. O’Hoy was replaced by Ian Johnston on 21 July 2008 in the position of acting CEO.

It was founded in Melbourne in 1886 by two American brothers, William and Ralph Foster of New York, who happened to own a refrigeration plant, which was necessary to brew beer in Australia’s hot climate. They sold the brewery the following year and returned to the United States.

In 1983 Elders IXL, a giant Australian diversified conglomerate, purchased Carlton and United Breweries, and renamed it Elders Brewing Group. Then in 1990, the Elders Brewing Group changed its name to the Foster’s Group, to reflect the name of their most internationally recognized product.

In 2005, Foster’s Group acquired the Australian wine-making group Southcorp. This acquisition added famous brands such as Penfolds, Lindemans and Rosemount to the Foster’s stable and around $1 billion AUD to revenues.

There has long been speculation that the beer sector or all of Foster’s Group will be subject to a takeover by a larger firm. Groups to express such an interest over the years have included Diageo, SABMiller, Molson Coors and Heineken.

Foster’s Group imports, licenses, and distributes a large number of brands. In Australia, Foster’s distributes the Asahi Super Dry, Carlsberg, Cinzano, Corona, Kronenbourg 1664, Perrier, Skyy vodka, Stella Artois, and 42 Below import brands among many others. While in the United States and Canadian markets, Molson brews and sells Foster’s Lager under license.

In August 2008, it was convicted and fined more than $1-million for two breaches of Victoria’s (Australia’s) Occupational Health and Safety Act which led to the death of a worker in 2006. The prosecution of the company by the Director of Public Prosecutions for WorkSafe Victoria resulted in a call for the company to better report on health and safety in its Annual Report.

Foster’s announced yearly results which ended on June 30, 2009. The net sales revenue increases by 2.7% to $4.5 billion. Net profit increases by 4.0% to $741.5m and earnings per share increases by 4.6% to 38.5 cents.

Constellation Brands

Constellation Brands, Inc., headquartered in Victor, New York, is the largest wine company in the world with a broad portfolio of wine brands complemented by imported beer, spirits and other beverage alcohol products.

The company was established in 1945 by Marvin Sands in the Finger Lakes region of New York as Canandaigua Industries Company. Since that time, the company has grown through internal expansion and by acquisitions across all segments of the beverage alcohol industry.

Constellation Brands is: the largest wine producer in the world; the largest premium wine company in the U.S.; the largest wine company in the U.K., Australia and Canada; the second largest wine company in New Zealand; the largest beer importer and marketer in the U.S. through its Crown Imports joint venture with Mexico’s Grupo Modelo. Constellation Brands had sales of more than $3.77 billion in fiscal year 2008. It operates approximately 50 production facilities, employs approximately 8,200 and sells and markets its products worldwide.

The company has a portfolio of more than 200 brands across the wine, beer and spirits categories. Major wine brands include Robert Mondavi, Hardys, Clos du Bois, Ravenswood, Blackstone, Banrock Station, Nobilo, Kim Crawford, Inniskillin, Jackson-Triggs and Arbor Mist. Major beer brands include Corona, Modelo Especial and Negra Modelo, Pacífico, St. Pauli Girl and Tsingtao. Major spirits brands include Black Velvet Canadian Whisky, Svedka Vodka and Paul Masson Grande Amber Brandy.

Constellation Brands has expanded by acquiring a number of other beverage companies throughout the world. Recent acquisitions include BRL Hardy (Australia) and Nobilo (New Zealand) in 2003; Robert Mondavi Corp. for $1 billion in 2004; Vincor International, Canada’s largest wine company, for $1.44 billion in 2006; Spirits Marque One (owner of Svedka Vodka) in 2007; and Beam Wines Estates, the wine operations of Fortune Brands (which included several major brands such as Clos du Bois) for $885 million in 2008. The company later moved to a more premium wine portfolio, divesting Almaden Vineyards, Inglenook Winery, and the Paul Masson winery in Madera, California, in 2008. and its value spirits portfolio in 2009.

TALKING PRICE CAN MAKE WINE NICE!

Is a hundred dollar bottle of wine really better than a five dollar bottle of wine? Maybe, but thinking your wine cost a hundred dollars can make you enjoy it more.

So, if you want to make sure your in-laws love the wine, tell them it was expensive. Research from the California Institute of Technology supports that.

In the Cal Tech study, subjects were given the exact same wine in two bottles and told that they sold for drastically different prices. Subjects invariably enjoyed the more expensive wine.

The new discipline of neuroeconomics aims to understand the subconscious appeal of luxury products. During their experiments, the Cal Tech researchers observed changes in the medio orbito-frontal cortex of subjects, which plays a role in our experiences of pleasure. The cortex became activated by wines subjects were told were expensive, indicating that the pleasure perceived was real and subjects were not reporting based on peer pressure or any other external influence.

For your reference, here are a few clever ways to let drop that the wine you are serving is expensive.

“I hope you like this wine, it cost enough.”

“It was a little over budget, but when I tasted this, I had to get some.”

“I should keep this bottle. It cost more than that crystal vase.”

I’m sitting in front of the TV, which I rarely do, but it’s a great night of Food Network programing and it has me in the mood to do a little blogging. Today is the day we aired our Grape Encounters Radio show with Amy Reiley, a leading expert on the aphrodisiac properties of certain wines and food.

It has been fun watching the website stats today on GrapeEncountersRadio.com. People have been tuning in from all over the world to catch this episode, and though I was reluctant at first to do the show, I now think we are going to do a lot more on the subject down the road.

Men will pay $12.00 a dose for the little blue pill. Gosh, for the cost of just a few of those pills, you can buy a very SEXY CABERNET! According to Amy, a great big, kick-ass Cab can do wonders when it comes to heating up the passion meter. Duh! I’ve know that for years. In fact, I’ve founds some cabs so enticing that they make a pretty darn good date all by themselves. OK, well the conversation could have been better… however a great bottle of wine will speak to you in magical ways.

Back to the interview… Amy is the co-author of the LOVE DIET COOKBOOK; a book that contains simple food and beverage recipies that promise to pump up your passion in very real ways. Anyway, I felt a little bit shy about doing this interview because I’m kind of a country boy at heart who happened to wander into the world of wine. Amy, on the other hand is a very frank and sexually liberated woman who is more likely to be heard on Playboy Radio than Grape Encounters Radio. Nonetheless, in the end, I was pleased that we wandered out of the safety of our winery and into some of the private places that good wines often find their way to. The fact is, if empty wine bottles could talk, my oh my, the stories they could tell. But a good wine knows how to put a cork in it.

Which brings us to the second segment of Episode 46B, where we continue our spirited debate with Clive Pursehouse of the Oregon Wine Blog about screwcap enclosures. We think they’re a mood-killer when it comes to romance. Clive says the wines of the NW are so good, the romance will not be hampered. Maybe he’s right. After all, a hot romance flick always contains that scene where the lovers can’t get to the action quickly enough. So who has time for a corkscrew and all the ritual that goes with it? Up in the Pacific Northwest, perhaps the motto could be, “unscrew it and get to it!” Not bad! Anyway, we had a great time with Clive who is described as one of the handsomest bloggers on the internet. His picture is on GrapeEncountersRadio.com. With looks like that, I don’t thing romantic wine rituals matter much.

A Few Thoughts About Grape, err, Great Encounters

I have recently had a staggering revelation. Nearly all of the people that I have become close to over the past couple of years were once nothing more than pictures and words. Even more amazing is the fact that many if not most of my best guests on Grape Encounters got there because of contacts made via some sort of electronic medium. They were discovered or located through facebook or google or some similar way. I have enjoyed having the ability to sift through blogs, profiles, pictures and postings to learn a great deal about people who would later become friends or featured guests.

“Getting to know you” in this age often begins with chance discoveries that we could not have imagined. I remember the first time that someone that I did not know sent me a friend request on facebook. It was a woman in Georgia. I sent her a note asking, “Do I know you?” She sent me a note back explaining that she was trying to make new friends with people she found interesting. She found me using the six or less degrees of separation method… sifting through friends of friends of friends. I accepted the friend request and though she and I exchange posts, the really cool outcome of this chance encounter is the fact that I connected her with a real flesh and blood friend who had moved to her neck of the woods and they became fast friends… meeting to enjoy real human contact.

Today I have hundreds of “friends” that have wandered into my safe little cyber world. Often, something will appear on my wall that captures my attention and communication begins. A minute or two on the phone can be very revealing and I can quickly determine whether or not that person should be upgraded to “flesh and blood.”

Anyway, the exciting part is the more Grape Encounters finds its way around the internet or reaches people the old fashioned way, the more people we connect with… sometimes in very unexpected ways. We may show up on google as a link to someone who liked or disliked what we put out there–and while I tend to prefer the likes, the dislikes can be rewarding too because I recognize that I am often too close to the subject and overlook things that might be significant. In the end, we use all that communication as a barometer that helps us emphasize things that are hitting home and tweak things that miss the mark. Our growing network of friends and followers gives us instant feedback that people who worked in radio didn’t have before. It’s a wonderful thing indeed. One of my very favorite people these days is someone who did not get the warm fuzzies from a show that had hoped to deliver that response. We began communicating a bit so that I could better understand the objection. The points had merit and we now communicate in just about every way available to us, sharing ideas and insights that make us better.

Today, the web we have woven, both intentionally and unintentionally acts like a net that seems to catch and endless number of individuals eager to share what they know. Our access to people that would have been difficult to contact a few years ago is now uncanny. I regularly send messages via email or facebook to facinating people that help us raise the bar each week. Every day brings more and more great encounters.

I’ve just started writing this blog and I have to admit that it came about with great reluctance. I recognize that our show is better when presented in multiple dimensions… the spoken word, pictures, the written word and in person. I plan on getting a handle on this blogging thing so be patient with me. I don’t know all the ropes quite yet but I am learning a lot from a real pro who dishes out healthy doses of wisdom online each week and lets it do its magic on complete strangers who will spread the word.

The term “friends with benefits” has come to mean something a little sordid. But the friends we have made by making Grape Encounters more accessible have benefited us in ways too numerous to enumerate. We love these very wholesome encounters. They are endlessly satisfying!

I’m going to spend the long weekend in the Santa Ynez Valley where I hope to get a very special group of perfect strangers together to talk about possibilities. And yes, these strangers are perfect. Frankly, I am awed by the incredible people that have wandered into my life recently… Shelly, Brian, John, Wes, Keith, Mary Ann, Jennifer, Amanda and so many more. I am inspired by so many of you and I think incredible things are on the horizon. I’m anxious to make some important introductions. Can’t wait.

As for all you other awesome people. Jump in if you feel like it. There is strength in numbers and we have a great big wonderful world hungry for fresh ideas and a feel-good attitude.

Wine Notes: Taking Metaphors to the Extreme!

A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity.

I love metaphors and spit them out much the way Linda Blair spewed pea soup in the Exorcist. In my book, a metaphor is great when it helps you to understand what something is like by comparing it to something completely different. Here are some great examples:

His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the countryspeaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipsewithout one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.

She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.

McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup .

Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.

Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.

The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.

He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

Anyway, those are some solid metaphors…. but when it comes to describing wine, the metaphors can send your head swirling! Here are a few wine notes that demonstrate what I’m saying:

“The 2001 Batard-Montrachet offers a thick, dense aromatic profile of toasted white and yellow fruits. This rich, corpulent offering reveals lush layers of chewy buttered popcorn flavors. Medium-bodied and extroverted, this is a street-walker of a wine, making up for its lack of class and refinement with its well-rounded, sexually-charged assets.”

Here’s another…

“A beguiling combination of rich, almost decadent flavors on an upright frame that has a nicely buried backbone of acidity and tannin. Nothing is obstrusive, everything is in graceful balance, leaving an ultimate impression of both muscle and flesh.”

Wine writer Colin Bower is frustrated with the use of simile and metaphor in wine writing. He questions why we can’t seem to describe the experience of tasting wine in a direct, factual way, without using metaphor. Here’s a great quote from Mr. Bower:

“Wine is always described as being like something else. This is appealingly post modern. If a chardonnay tastes a bit like a peach, what then does the peach taste like? A chardonnay? And if so, what does either taste like? If you must describe the Van Loveren 2001 limited edition Merlot as being “chocolately”, does it mean that chocolate tastes like the Van Loveren Merlot? And if we like the Merlot on account if its tasting like chocolate, why don’t we eat chocolate instead of drinking wine?”

Amen Mr. Bower, we couldn’t be in agreement with you more!

A Note From the Reluctant Blogger

I did not ever intend to blog. For a very long time, I didn’t even know what a blog was. I originally thought it was a chunk of something caught in your throat. Anyway, here I am, when I could be watching TV or doing something entertaining–but instead, I’m pecking on the keyboard… and you’re probably wondering why.

On the Grape Encounters Radio show, I casually share my thoughts about wine drinking, the wine experience, wine people and a lot of really off-beat subjects simply because they tickle my fancy. When we first started airing on broadcast radio (thanks to Knight Broadcasting on the Central Coast of California) I wasn’t really sure who if anybody was listening. But the station got calls and I got emails and comments and the owner of the cluster moved our easy-going little show to a great Saturday slot and all hell broke loose.

We had a website which we kind of neglected a bit–and its only purpose was to show you the faces of the people you were hearing. We then made it possible for you to hear the show online. In recent months, our daily visits have climbed to heights I never imagined, and now I’m totally paranoid about making sure that we have something here for you to enjoy.

So for a little while, we’re going to have to muster up content and get the ball rolling. We’ve put up a totally new photo gallery that needs serious organizing but we’re on it. We want to become a fun and useful resource that you can visit often.

If you don’t know what we’re all about, it is simple. We want to liberate you wine lovers from the stuffy, pretentious minority that insist that you enjoy it and do it there way. We’ll try to give you meaningful guidance, but mostly, we just want you to have the maximum amount of fun with your wine experience.

As I wrap up this first little introductory epistle, I want to thank Radio Blogger Jennifer, who served up some pretty stiff criticism of one of my recent shows. At first I was a pretty befuddled by the realization that not everybody was enjoying what I was dishing out. But then it occurred to me that not everyone likes the same wines either. The most important lesson is this… No matter what you’re serving, make it the very best it can be–because, in the end, even if others don’t like it, at least they may appreciate it. 57 Wine Experts Mistook White Wines for Reds

Excerpt from The Subjectivity of Wine by Jonah Lehrer:

In 2001, Frederic Brochet, of the University of Bordeaux, conducted two separate and very mischievous experiments. In the first test, Brochet invited 57 wine experts and asked them to give their impressions of what looked like two glasses of red and white wine. The wines were actually the same white wine, one of which had been tinted red with food coloring. But that didn’t stop the experts from describing the “red” wine in language typically used to describe red wines. One expert praised its “jamminess,” while another enjoyed its “crushed red fruit.” Not a single one noticed it was actually a white wine.

The second test Brochet conducted was even more damning. He took a middling Bordeaux and served it in two different bottles. One bottle was a fancy grand-cru. The other bottle was an ordinary vin du table. Despite the fact that they were actually being served the exact same wine, the experts gave the differently labeled bottles nearly opposite ratings. The grand cru was “agreeable, woody, complex, balanced and rounded,” while the vin du table was “weak, short, light, flat and faulty”. Forty experts said the wine with the fancy label was worth drinking, while only 12 said the cheap wine was.
